Magical Experiments

This week was full of inferring, trying, finding, experimenting and enlightening. We looked into different forces and how these forces shape our thinking and affect our innovation. Our experiments were divided into 2 parts: PRE-EXPERIMENT and POST EXPERIMENT. The pre-experiment encouraged them to THINK and come up with a wise guess (hypothesis)[ We explored GRAVITY and discovered that this pull force from our beautiful Earth, keep us from floating freely and uncontrollably. The name of the ever fampous Isaac Newton came up as he was the very first one who questioned why things thrown upward always come down. We also looked into AIR RESISTANCE as we conducted the experiments on flat paper, crumpled paper and paper on top of the book. That's the reason why airplane's noses are shaped as a cone. Aside from that, we did an experiment of floating and sinking. Why do objects float in water? Of course, BUOYANCY is there to assist. Then we prepared ramps for toy cars to roll. We rolled the car on a ramp covered with aluminum foil, bubble wrap, wooly cloth and baking paper. Where do you think did it roll the slowest? That's because of FRICTION. And the Grade 1s mosty favourite force so far (and also mine) - MAGNETISM! Grade 1s made the magical wand that makes paper cut outs float or fly (actually suspend in the air). It was challenging to some but it was FUN seeing them getting amazed when they were able to make their paper cut outs float.
