A Glimpse of the Past
Grade 1s started exploring the new unit under the theme, Where we are in place and time.
We are going to look into this central idea: Children in the past lived differently from how we live today.
we started by unpacking terms in the central idea:
Who are the children in the past?
Who are the children at present?
What are the things included in daily living?
As the Grade 1s defined children in the past as the adults or grown ups at present, the Grade 1s decided to get information first hand from them.
After the break, expect these Grade 1s to be more inquisitive as they will continue to gather information about life in the past.

Showing Responsibility
As we ended our unit on How we organise ourselves which focused on the central idea 'Food people eat goes through several steps from farm to table.', Grade 1s conducted a survey to find out if DSKI students give importance to the food prepared for them for lunch. They collected information about the number of students at school who do not finish their lunch and they were surprised to learn that there are 32 students whose lunch food go to waste because they don7t eat them completely.
The Grade 1s were given a mission to think of possible ways to solve this BIG concern at school. They grouped themselve sinto 3-4 members, discussed and planned how they can help the school community.
They had diverse ideas: posters for display, short video clip, song and dance.
Grade 1s hope that through this, they can encourage all students in the school to give value to the food that are served on their tables.
Field Trip to Osaka Kids Museum
It was on a sunny Friday of 6 October 2023, when the students from Grade 1 together with Pre-School and Grade 2, went to Osaka Kids Museum. It was not an educational excursion but it was an excursion that allowed students to develop their social skills as they went to explore different areas together, play with each other, take turns and help each other.
The students were excited to try the indoor wall climbing, cross hanging bridge, slide down a curvy slide, create a balancing wire, and others.
They also got to try on some traditional clothes from Korea, play musical instruments from other countries and play traditional games from other countries too.
They also explored some simple machines, made small and big bubbles, experimented on sounds, and others.
It was one day of fun!

Our Plants Keep on Growing
Our potatoes and vegetables are growing!
At the beginning of the unit, we planted potatoes and vegetables in the garden. We tried our best to take care of them.
We achieved our goal, and that is to have some harvests ready in a few more weeks. These products will be donated to the Food Bank Kansai.
This goes as part of our taking responsibility for our community members who need help.
